Anyone about to apply

Before you apply anywhere: 6 checks that protect your credit file

Every formal application can leave an enquiry on your file. These six checks stop that happening for nothing.

  1. 1Get your own credit report firstEquifax, Experian and illion each give you a free copy, and checking your own file does not count as an enquiry. Look for defaults or enquiries you do not recognise.
  2. 2Count your recent enquiriesSeveral applications in a few months can read as credit shopping. If you have had three or more lately, pause and compare before you apply again.
  3. 3Work out the repayment you can carryStart with your fortnightly take-home pay. Take off your regular costs and existing debts, then leave a buffer. That number, not the loan amount, is what a lender tests.
  4. 4Line up your last three payslips and bank statementsMost lenders ask for them. Having them ready means a lender sees a complete file the first time.
  5. 5Know the car before you know the loanAge, kilometres and whether it is a dealer or private sale all change which lenders will consider it.
  6. 6Ask how the enquiry is placedAsk anyone offering to help whether their first step is a soft check or a formal application. You are entitled to know before anything touches your file.
