How Caravan Finance Works in Australia

A caravan loan is a secured personal or consumer loan where the caravan itself acts as security for the lender. Because the caravan can be re registered and sold if the loan defaults, secured caravan rates sit well below unsecured personal loan rates. Lenders treat caravans, camper trailers, hybrid campers and motorhomes as recreational assets, with slightly different age and term rules than passenger cars.

Loan funds are paid directly to the seller, whether that is a licensed dealer or a private vendor, once the lender has verified the unit on the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR). Settlement is usually 24 to 72 hours from formal approval. You drive away (or hitch up) once the seller confirms cleared funds and registration transfer.

Why Choose Simple Loans

  • Access to 50+ Australian lenders, including specialist caravan and recreational asset lenders most banks do not work with
  • One 2 minute quote checks your fit across the entire panel, with a soft footprint only
  • Retiree and pensioner friendly lenders for grey nomad buyers
  • Private sale, dealer, new, used and ex hire all supported
  • Accessory bundling: annexes, solar, lithium batteries, satellite, weight distribution and tow gear can be financed into the same loan
  • No upfront fees, no obligation, free assessment

Buying a Caravan Privately

Around a third of caravan loans we settle are private sales. The process is straightforward: we arrange a PPSR clearance to confirm the unit is unencumbered, an independent valuation if required, and pay the seller directly via EFT. Title transfer happens through your state transport authority as soon as the lender confirms cleared funds.

Caravan Finance for Retirees and Self Funded Pensioners

Grey nomad buyers are well served by our panel. Lenders that accept Age Pension, account based pension drawdowns and superannuation income include both major banks and specialist non bank lenders. The key is showing the loan is responsibly serviceable from your regular income, not capital. Many retired customers also bring a trade in or part deposit, which improves the rate offered.

What Documents Will I Need?

Caravan Loan FAQs

What types of caravans can I finance through Simple Loans?

We arrange finance for every common RV class sold in Australia: pop top caravans, full height tourers, family bunk vans, off road and hybrid campers, fifth wheelers, slide on campers, camper trailers, motorhomes, A class and C class RVs, and toy haulers. Both new and used units qualify, with most lenders financing used caravans up to 15 to 20 years old at end of term.

What are current caravan loan interest rates in Australia?

Caravan loan rates are set by the lender for borrowers with strong credit buying a new or near new caravan from a licensed dealer. The exact rate depends on caravan age at end of term, loan amount, deposit, employment and credit profile. Rates vary by lender — a specialist confirms your actual rate.

How much can I borrow for a caravan?

Most lenders fund caravans from $8,000 up to $250,000. Standard family vans typically sit between $40,000 and $90,000, premium off road tourers between $90,000 and $160,000, and full size motorhomes from $150,000 upwards. Borrowing power depends on your serviceability, deposit and the asset itself.

How much deposit do I need for a caravan loan?

Many caravan loans settle with no deposit for applicants with good credit and a stable income, particularly for new dealer stock. Older units, private sales or credit impaired applications usually require a 10 to 20 per cent deposit or a trade in of equivalent value.

Can I finance caravan accessories, annexes and solar?

Yes. Most lenders allow you to bundle dealer fitted accessories such as annexes, awnings, solar panels, lithium batteries, inverters, satellite TV, reversing cameras and weight distribution hitches into the one loan, provided they are itemised on the tax invoice.

What loan term should I choose for a caravan loan?

Caravan loan terms run from 2 to 7 years. A 5 year term is the most popular sweet spot, balancing affordable repayments with total interest. Shorter terms reduce interest cost; longer terms ease cashflow but the lender will check the unit will not be older than 15 to 20 years at end of term.

Can I get a caravan loan if I am retired or on the pension?

Yes. Several lenders on our panel accept self funded retiree income, superannuation drawdowns, account based pensions and combined Centrelink Age Pension where the application is responsibly serviceable. We will tell you upfront whether the deal is realistic before any credit check is run.

Can I use the caravan loan for a private sale?

Yes. Private sale caravan loans are common. The lender will require a clean PPSR report, photos of the caravan, the seller's bank details and a current market valuation. Loan funds are paid directly to the seller after PPSR is cleared.

Will applying for a caravan loan hurt my credit score?

No. Our 2 minute quote uses a soft credit footprint only and does not affect your credit score. A formal credit enquiry happens only when you choose to proceed to a specific lender.
