How apprentice pay is set
The Fair Work Ombudsman says apprentice pay depends on the award or registered agreement that covers you, how long the apprenticeship is and how much training you have done. We do not quote wage figures here because they differ by award.
| Point | What the Fair Work Ombudsman says |
|---|---|
| Who gets apprentice rates | Employees with a formal training contract registered with a state or territory training authority |
| Pay increases | Time based (for example after 12 months) or competency based, depending on the award |
| After you finish | You are paid the tradesperson's rate |
| Where to check | The Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool, or your agreement if you are covered by one |
A lender looks at your actual payslips, so bring recent ones and note when your next pay step is due.
The Victorian apprentice registration discount
The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) says apprentices may be eligible for a 100 per cent registration discount. It is separate from any car loan, so check the current rules with the VRQA and VicRoads before you rely on it.
| Condition | What the VRQA says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Discount | Apprentices may be eligible for a 100 per cent registration discount | Whether you are an eligible apprentice under the VRQA page |
| Use of the vehicle | The car, ute or van must be used for work or travel to or from work between 8:30 pm and 5:30 am | Whether your hours and travel fit that window |
| Licence | A current Victorian licence is needed, and a learner permit does not qualify | That your licence is a current Victorian one |
| How to apply | Apply through VicRoads with your VRQA registration number | Your VRQA registration number and VicRoads steps |
| Employer check | VicRoads checks with the employer | That your employer can confirm your details |
How lenders may look at apprentice income in Victoria
Lenders on our panel look at the same things they do for apprentices anywhere in Australia. Income is the first test, usually averaged over recent payslips. Employment length with your current employer matters, and a thin credit file is normal for a first loan. A deposit or a guarantor can help some applications. Apprentice pay can rise as you progress, so a lender may still ask whether the repayment fits what you earn today.
Budget the whole cost of the car
A registration discount, where you qualify, lowers one running cost. It does not cover insurance, fuel, servicing or tyres. Work out the weekly cost of the whole car and keep the repayment at a level your take home pay can carry. A cheaper, reliable car often suits an apprentice better than the biggest loan on offer.

Frequently asked questions.
Do Victorian apprentices get free car registration?
They may. The VRQA says apprentices may be eligible for a 100 per cent registration discount. Conditions apply, including use of the vehicle for work or travel to or from work between 8:30 pm and 5:30 am. Check the VRQA page and VicRoads for the current rules.
Who can claim the Victorian apprentice registration discount?
The apprentice must hold a current Victorian licence, and a learner permit does not qualify. The VRQA says the car, ute or van must be used for work or travel to or from work between 8:30 pm and 5:30 am. The employer is checked by VicRoads.
How do I apply for the Victorian apprentice registration discount?
You apply through VicRoads using your VRQA registration number, and VicRoads checks with your employer. Simple Loans does not process the discount. Use the VRQA and VicRoads pages for the current steps.
Does the registration discount change how a lender assesses my car loan?
Not directly. A lender assesses your income, expenses and the car, not the discount. Lower running costs may leave more room in your budget, but a lender decides on its own policy and the discount is not a loan feature.
Can a first year apprentice in Melbourne get a car loan?
Often yes, with a smaller loan amount. Lenders on our panel may accept first year apprentice pay, usually averaged over recent payslips, and a thin credit file is not a decline on its own. Our Melbourne page covers the city context.
Can I finance a ute as a Victorian apprentice?
Some lenders on our panel may finance a ute on apprentice wages, sometimes with a smaller amount, a deposit or a guarantor. Tell us the trade and the vehicle before you buy so we can check it against lender policy.
