How apprentice pay is set

The Fair Work Ombudsman says apprentice pay depends on the award or registered agreement that covers you, how long the apprenticeship is and how much training you have done. We do not quote wage figures here because they differ by award.

Duty and registration for NSW apprentices

We looked for an apprentice concession on vehicle duty or registration on nsw.gov.au and found none. That is a finding about what we could see, not a guarantee, so check Service NSW for the current rules before you buy.

How lenders may look at apprentice income in NSW

Lenders on our panel use the same tests for apprentices wherever they live. Income comes first, usually averaged over recent payslips. Employment length with your current employer matters, and a thin credit file is normal for a first loan. A deposit or a guarantor can help some applications. A lender may still check that the repayment fits what you earn today, even if your pay is likely to rise as you progress.

Plan for duty and registration up front

Because we found no apprentice concession, treat duty and registration as real costs. A deposit can cover part of them and keep the loan smaller. Add insurance, fuel, servicing and tyres, then keep the repayment at a level your take home pay can carry. A reliable, cheaper car often suits a first year wage better than a bigger loan.

Frequently asked questions.

Do NSW apprentices get a vehicle registration or duty concession?

We found no apprentice vehicle duty or registration concession on nsw.gov.au, so do not assume one. Duty and registration apply as for other buyers. Service NSW has the current rules, and it is worth checking there before you budget.

How is motor vehicle duty charged in NSW?

NSW motor vehicle duty is charged on a sliding scale, with a higher rate above a threshold that changes. Check Service NSW for the current rates rather than relying on an old figure, and add duty to the cost of the car when you plan.

Can a first year apprentice in Sydney get a car loan?

Often yes, with a smaller loan amount. Lenders on our panel may accept first year apprentice pay, usually averaged over recent payslips, and a thin credit file is not a decline on its own. Our Sydney page covers the city context.

Should I borrow extra to cover duty and registration?

Lenders differ on whether they will include costs like these in the loan, and borrowing more means paying more interest over time. A smaller loan and a deposit towards duty may suit a first year wage better. Ask us before you buy.

Can I finance a ute as a NSW apprentice?

Some lenders on our panel may finance a ute on apprentice wages, sometimes with a smaller amount, a deposit or a guarantor. Tell us the trade and the vehicle before you buy so we can check it against lender policy.

Will a lender treat a NSW apprentice differently to one in Victoria?

Not usually. Lenders assess income, employment, expenses and the car in much the same way across states. The state difference is in government costs and concessions, which are separate from the loan, so check each state's own rules.
