Self Employed With Bad Credit? Get a Car Loan Plan That Fits

Running your own business with a default, a tax debt or thin returns on file? We explain how lenders on our panel may read your income and your credit, then compare eligible options.

Can I get a car loan if I am self employed with bad credit?

It may be possible. Some specialist lenders on our panel consider self employed applicants with defaults, late payments or a tax payment plan, using bank statements, BAS or an accountant letter beside your credit file. Approval, rate and amount depend on each lender's assessment and responsible lending checks.

  • Lenders look at both sides: how steady your business income is and what is on your credit file
  • Low doc evidence such as bank statements, BAS or an accountant letter may replace tax returns for some lenders
  • An ATO payment plan that is up to date is usually read differently from an unmanaged tax debt
  • Say what is on your file at the start so the right lenders are approached first
  • Rates are set by the lender and a higher rate is common when a credit file is impaired
  • No upfront assessment fee. Lender fees may apply, and we may receive commission if your loan settles

Why self employed income is read differently

An employee has payslips that show a steady figure. A self employed borrower often has income that moves with the season, the client list or one large job. So lenders read the pattern rather than a single number. They usually want to know how long the business has traded, how steady the income has been and what is left after business costs.

When a credit event is also on file, the lender has two questions to answer, not one. First, is the income dependable enough to carry the repayment? Second, does the credit history suggest a risk that needs more security or a smaller amount? Treat those as separate problems. You can often improve the first with better evidence even if the second takes time.

If you are not sure which evidence suits you, see our self employed car loans guide, and low doc car loans for how alternative income evidence works.

Documents lenders may ask for

Every lender sets its own list, and a credit event often means they ask for more. This table covers what is commonly requested. Having it ready before you apply saves time.

Documents lenders may ask for: ABN holder with bad credit
DocumentWhy it mattersHow to get it
ABN detailsConfirms the business exists, its start date and its trading nameLook up your ABN on the Australian Business Register and check it matches your application
Business bank statementsShow real income arriving and how the account is managedDownload recent statements from your bank, covering the months the lender asks for
Personal bank statementsShow living costs, existing repayments and any dishonoured paymentsDownload from your bank, and note any unusual deposits so you can explain them
BASReports the turnover you have declared for each period, if you lodge themYour accountant or your ATO online account
Tax returns and notices of assessmentUsed by full doc lenders to confirm income after expensesYour accountant, or your ATO online account
Accountant letterA professional view of your income and trading history, used by some low doc lendersAsk a registered accountant who knows your finances; allow time for them to prepare it
ATO payment plan detailsShows the debt is being managed and what the repayments areYour ATO online account, or the plan confirmation the ATO sent you
Default or credit file detailsLets the lender see what is listed, when and whether it is paidRequest your credit report from the credit reporting bodies and check every entry
Proof of IDRequired for every applicationDriver licence and a second document such as Medicare, as the lender specifies

How lenders may look at each credit event for a self employed borrower

No two lenders weigh these the same way. This is a general guide to what each event may mean, not a promise about any one lender.

How lenders may look at each credit event for a self employed borrower
Credit eventHow a lender may look at itWhat helps
Paid defaultMay be weighed less heavily than an unpaid one, and reviewed alongside how recent it isEvidence it is paid, and clean repayments and statements since
Unpaid defaultMay limit the lenders available and the amount offeredSay so early, and show a payment arrangement or a plan to settle it
ATO debt or payment planA plan that is being met may be read more favourably than a debt with no plan; some lenders will not consider tax debt at allThe plan confirmation and a record of payments made on time
Late repaymentsHow often and how recently usually matter more than one late paymentSeveral months of on time payments on current accounts
Part 9 debt agreement or bankruptcySome specialist lenders consider these, and the rules differ for current and discharged bankruptsThe agreement or discharge papers, and stable business income since
Thin ABN historyA short trading history makes income harder to verify, so lenders lean on bank statements and any prior work in the same tradeStatements that show steady deposits, contracts and a letter about your earlier trade experience

For the wider picture on credit events, see bad credit car loans. For specific histories see Part 9 car loans and car loans for bankrupts.

How to show income when your returns are weak

Tax returns show income after business deductions, so a business that spends heavily can show a modest figure even when the money moving through it is strong. That is legal and common, but it can shrink the amount a lender will assess. If your returns are weak, a lender on our panel may look at other evidence instead.

  • Bank statements: several months of deposits that show regular, real income.
  • BAS: your declared turnover for each period, if you lodge them.
  • An accountant letter: a professional summary of income and trading history.
  • Contracts or ongoing work: evidence that income will continue, not just that it happened.
  • A longer history in the same trade: prior employment in the same field can support a newer ABN.

Be consistent. A lender is more comfortable when the bank statements, BAS and accountant letter all point to the same picture. If there is a gap or a one off deposit, explain it in writing before the lender has to ask. Our low ABN car loans page covers a newer ABN, and car loans for contractors covers income paid per contract.

What a lender may ask about a default or ATO debt

We will say this plainly, because a surprise at the credit check helps nobody. A lender may ask:

  • What the default or debt was for, and who it was owed to.
  • When it happened, and whether it is paid, in a payment arrangement or still outstanding.
  • What has changed since: steadier income, a new accountant, a different business setup.
  • For a tax debt, whether you have a payment plan, what the repayment is and whether recent payments have been met.
  • Whether the repayment on the new loan would leave you short once the tax payments and your business costs are taken out.

You do not have to have a perfect answer. A short, honest explanation with paperwork behind it is usually better than a long story. If something on the file is wrong, you can ask for it to be corrected. If a debt is out of hand, a financial counsellor can help you deal with it before you take on more credit.

Different lenders use different credit criteria. We can check whether options on our panel may be worth discussing, but approval, rate and loan amount depend on the lender's assessment and responsible-lending requirements.

A worked example of how lenders may average income

This is an illustration only. The numbers are round and made up to show how different methods can give different answers. They are not a rate, an offer, a prediction or a figure any lender uses. Each lender sets its own policy.

Imagine a sole trader whose taxable income after business costs was $48,000 in the earlier year and $72,000 in the latest year. A lender may count that in different ways.

Illustration only: how lenders may count the same income
MethodIncome counted in this exampleWhat it shows
Average of two years$60,000Smooths a rising or falling year, a common approach for full doc
Latest year only$72,000Used by some lenders when the trend is clearly up and the evidence is current
Lower of the two years$48,000A cautious approach, more likely when there is a credit event on file
Bank statement methodDepends on the deposits and the lender's allowance for business costsUsed by some low doc lenders instead of returns

The lender then compares the counted income with commitments. In the same example, suppose there is also an ATO payment plan of $400 a month and a credit card with a $5,000 limit. Both can reduce the repayment the lender is willing to assess you for, even though neither is a new loan. This is why a clear picture of your commitments matters as much as the income.

Some lenders may add back certain non cash business expenses, such as depreciation, to the income they count. Whether they do depends on the lender, so ask your accountant what is in your returns.

Steps to strengthen the file in 30 to 90 days

  1. Days 1 to 7: get the facts. Request your credit report and check every entry. Download business and personal bank statements. Ask your accountant for your latest figures.
  2. Days 7 to 30: fix what you can. Dispute anything wrong on your report. If you owe the ATO, make sure a payment arrangement is in place and being met. Pay off or settle small defaults where it makes sense. Keep every personal and business account out of overdrawn or dishonoured territory.
  3. Days 30 to 60: build a clean record. Pay everything on time. Avoid new credit applications. Cancel unused credit card limits and buy now pay later accounts, because lenders may count the limit as a commitment.
  4. Days 60 to 90: assemble the evidence. Ask your accountant for a letter if you plan a low doc application. Pull recent BAS and statements together. Write a short explanation of any default or tax debt, with the paperwork behind it.
  5. Compare, then apply once. Each credit application can be noted on your report, so we compare options first and only submit when you are ready.

Waiting is not always the right call. If your car is essential for work today, tell us, and we can discuss what may be available now. See also our car loan documents guide.

Company or sole trader, and personal or business finance

How you trade changes how a lender looks at you. A sole trader and the business are the same person for credit purposes, so your personal file is in play. A company applicant may be assessed on the company's accounts, and the lender often asks directors to guarantee the loan, which puts the director's credit file in play anyway.

Vehicles used mainly for work may suit business finance such as a chattel mortgage, while a vehicle used mostly for personal driving usually sits under a consumer loan. The lender decides which product fits, and how the vehicle will be used has to be stated honestly. Ask your accountant about GST and tax treatment before you choose, because that is outside what we can advise on. To see how the numbers behave, try the loan calculator, and for what to check across offers see compare car loans.

When a car loan may not be the right step

A car loan is not always the answer, and we would rather tell you that up front.

  • If you owe tax or other debts you cannot manage, sorting those first may leave you better placed. A financial counsellor is free and confidential. Call the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.
  • If the business income is falling, a new repayment can add pressure. Be honest with yourself about whether the repayment still fits in a slow quarter.
  • If the credit event is very recent, waiting a few months while you build a clean record may widen the options and lower the cost.
  • If you are thinking about bankruptcy, speak to a financial counsellor before taking on new credit.
  • If you only need a cheaper vehicle, a smaller amount may be easier to place than a larger one.

If the repayment would leave you short, we will say so rather than push an application.

Frequently asked questions.

How long do I need an ABN to get a car loan with bad credit?

It depends on the lender. Some lenders on our panel like to see an ABN held for around two years, while others consider a newer ABN when there is strong supporting evidence such as bank statements or a long history in the same trade. Our low ABN car loans page explains the options in more detail.

Can I get a car loan with bad credit and no tax returns?

It can be possible with a low doc lender. Instead of returns, a lender may ask for recent business bank statements, BAS, an accountant letter or a declaration of income. A credit event on your file usually means the lender looks harder at that evidence, so keep it consistent and current.

Do lenders use BAS or tax returns for a self employed car loan?

Either can be used, depending on the lender and the product. Full doc lenders usually want tax returns and notices of assessment. Low doc lenders may accept BAS and bank statements. Whichever is used, the figures need to line up with your bank accounts.

Will an accountant letter help my application?

It can. A letter from a registered accountant who knows your finances may support your income and trading history, and some low doc lenders ask for one. It does not replace the lender's own assessment, and it is more useful when it matches your bank statements.

Do I need business or personal bank statements?

Lenders often ask for the account your business income lands in. If that is a personal account, they may want those statements. If you have a separate business account, they may want both. Regular deposits and few dishonoured payments help most.

Is it easier to borrow as a sole trader or through a company?

Neither is automatically easier. A sole trader is assessed personally, while a company loan may look at the company's accounts and sometimes ask for director guarantees. Which suits you can depend on how the vehicle will be used, so ask your accountant about the structure and we can check lender policy.

Should I apply for a personal car loan or a business loan?

That depends on how the car will be used and how you are set up. A personal loan is assessed on your personal position. A business product such as a chattel mortgage is assessed on the business and is usually for vehicles used mainly for work. Ask your accountant about the tax side.

What is the difference between a chattel mortgage and a consumer car loan?

A chattel mortgage is a business finance product where the vehicle is security, and it is generally used for vehicles bought for business use. A consumer car loan is for personal use. Lenders assess them under different rules, so the better fit depends on how you will use the car.

Will a deposit help me get a car loan with defaults?

A deposit lowers the amount borrowed, which some lenders weigh in your favour when a file has a credit event. It is not required by every lender. If a deposit is out of reach, tell us, because some lenders on our panel assess low deposit applications case by case.

Can a guarantor help a self employed borrower with bad credit?

It can help some applications, because the lender also relies on the guarantor's position. A guarantor takes on real risk if the loan is not repaid, so they should understand it fully and may wish to get their own independent legal or financial counselling before agreeing.

Can I get a car loan if I owe the ATO?

Some lenders on our panel consider applicants with a tax debt, particularly where there is a payment arrangement and it is being met. Others will not. A lender may ask for the arrangement and recent evidence of payments. Speak to your accountant or a financial counsellor about the debt itself.

Can a ute for work be financed if I am self employed with bad credit?

Often a work vehicle can be considered, but a credit event may narrow the lenders and the age and kilometre limits. Our bad credit tradie car loans page covers utes in detail, and the ute finance page explains the vehicle side. Ask your accountant about GST and tax treatment.

Will applying for a car loan hurt my credit file?

Each formal credit application can be noted on your credit report, and several in a short time can count against you. That is why we ask about your situation first and compare options before anything is submitted. A lender only runs a credit check when you choose to proceed.
