Partner visa 820 and 801: what the visa allows
These facts come from the Department of Home Affairs visa page, checked on 30 October 2026. Rules change, so confirm your own conditions in your visa grant notice or VEVO.
| Point | What Home Affairs says |
|---|---|
| Subclass 820 | A temporary visa for the partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen |
| Subclass 801 | The permanent partner visa, usually for people who hold a temporary 820 |
| How you apply | You apply for the temporary and permanent visas together, and you must be in Australia to apply |
| How long the 820 lasts | Until your 801 application is finalised or you withdraw it |
Because the 820 has no fixed end date on the visa page, a lender may ask what stage your application is at.
How lenders may look at a partner visa
A partner visa is temporary first (820), then permanent (801). Lenders may read the stages differently, and a partner on the application changes the picture again. None of this is a promise of approval.
| Topic | What the visa means | How a lender may look at it |
|---|---|---|
| Visa stage | The 820 is the temporary stage and the 801 is the permanent stage | May treat the 801 more like permanent residency, and the 820 with more caution |
| Term near visa expiry | Check your grant notice or VEVO for any end date on your current visa | May match the term to the time left where the visa has an end date |
| Partner and household income | The visa is based on the relationship | May consider a joint application, with both incomes and both credit files assessed |
| Employment history | Not set by the visa | May want recent payslips, and some lenders look for a few months in the current job |
| Credit file in Australia | A recent arrival may have a short file | May lean on income and bank statements, with a partner's file adding weight on a joint loan |
| Deposit | Not set by the visa | May lower the amount borrowed, which helps most while you hold the temporary stage |
Applying alone or with your partner
Applying alone keeps the debt in your name only, but the lender relies on your income and file. Applying together can lift what a lender is comfortable with, but both of you are responsible for the whole loan. Talk it through first, then ask us how each lender on our panel treats a joint application on your visa stage.
What to bring for a partner visa car loan application

Frequently asked questions.
Can I get a car loan on a partner visa 820?
Some lenders on our panel consider the temporary 820, particularly with stable income and sometimes with a partner as co borrower. Policies differ by lender. Check your grant notice or VEVO for your current conditions, and approval depends on the lender's assessment.
Does getting the 801 make a car loan easier?
It can open more options, because the 801 is the permanent stage and some lenders treat permanent residents much like citizens. It is not automatic. Your income, expenses and credit file still decide the assessment.
When can the 801 be assessed after the 820?
The 801 can only be assessed once two years have passed since the 820 application. Check your own visa grant notice or VEVO for your status. Lenders look at the visa you hold on the day you apply, so do not assume the 801 until it is granted.
Can my Australian partner apply with me?
Often yes. A joint application lets a lender look at both incomes and both credit files, which may help when your own Australian history is short. Both borrowers are responsible for the whole loan, so we explain what a joint loan involves before you apply.
Does it matter if my partner is the main earner?
It can. A lender may assess household income and expenses on a joint application, and a main earner with a longer record can make the application read better. If your partner is not a borrower, your own income still has to support the repayment.
What if my relationship or visa situation changes during the loan?
The loan still has to be repaid. A joint loan stays a joint debt even if your circumstances change, so think about this before you sign. If your visa stage changes, tell your lender and ask us how it may affect any future finance.
