Bad credit does not lock you out of fast business finance in Australia. It changes the lender list and lifts the rate, but a healthy trading business with prior credit issues can still settle in 24 to 48 hours. Here is the honest map.
What "bad credit" means to a business lender
Business credit assessment is more forgiving than consumer. Lenders care about cash flow first, credit second. Issues that bother personal lenders barely register here:
- Paid defaults under $1,000: usually ignored.
- Telco and utility defaults: rarely fatal if explained.
- Court judgments: case by case, depends on age and amount.
- ATO arrears: acceptable if on a documented repayment plan.
- Part 9 debt agreement: fundable by 3 to 4 specialist lenders if discharged or near completion.
- Bankruptcy: discharged 12+ months ago is workable. Current bankruptcy is generally not fundable.
The lenders that say yes
The active bad credit panel in Australia is small but real:
- Bizcap | most aggressive on prior defaults and ATO debt.
- OnDeck | flexible on credit history if cash flow is strong.
- Lumi | works around minor defaults and judgments.
- Get Capital, Shift, Earlypay | case-by-case for harder files.
Banks and tier 2 commercial lenders almost always decline these files at policy. Going direct to a bank with bad credit costs you a month and a hard enquiry.
What it costs
Bad credit business loans price between 22% and 36% p.a. for unsecured, or factor rates of 1.20 to 1.45 on short term advances. Painful, but often the bridge between trading and not trading.
How to maximise your chance of approval
- Be upfront. Hidden defaults are discovered in seconds and kill your file.
- Provide a one paragraph written explanation of the credit issue and how it was resolved.
- Show 3 months of clean recent bank conduct. No dishonours, no overdrawn days.
- If you have an ATO plan, attach the letter from the ATO portal.
