Car Loans for Doctors. Built Around Contract and ABN Income

The complication for most doctors is not income, it is that the income arrives through an ABN rather than a payslip. We compare over 50 Australian lenders, including specialist lenders who assess a current agreement and bank statements instead of two years of returns.

Can doctors who contract through an ABN get a car loan?

Yes. Doctors contracting through an ABN can get a car loan in Australia. Specialist lenders on our panel assess your current service agreement, recent invoices or three to six months of bank statements instead of two years of tax returns, and an ABN held for six months is often enough to qualify.

  • Contractor doctors are assessed on a current agreement, invoices or bank statements
  • Three to six months of bank statements can replace two years of tax returns
  • Specialist lenders accept six to twelve months of ABN registration and trading
  • PAYG hospital doctors are assessed on payslips in the usual way
  • Rates on our panel start from 6.49% p.a. depending on lender and circumstances
  • Free assessment with no credit file enquiry until you choose a lender

Why the paperwork, not the income, is the obstacle

Medical income is rarely the problem in a car finance application. The problem is its shape. A large share of GPs, dentists and allied health practitioners work under a service agreement with a practice and bill through an ABN, which means there are no payslips to hand a lender, and a newly established ABN may not yet have two years of returns behind it.

Specialist lenders assess this directly. What they look for is much the same as for any contractor:

  • Income consistency: regular deposits into your account over three to twelve months.
  • Engagement history: a pattern of agreement renewals or back to back engagements.
  • Professional qualifications: registrations and qualifications strengthen the profile.
  • ABN status: active registration, with six to twelve months of trading accepted by specialist lenders.

Contractor, PAYG and mixed arrangements

Contractor doctors billing through an ABN are assessed on the agreement plus banking. Three to six months of bank statements can replace two years of tax returns, and an accountant's letter confirming income is accepted by some lenders.

PAYG hospital doctors and registrars are assessed on payslips in the usual way. Where the roster carries recurring shift allowances, penalties or regular overtime, those components should be included rather than base salary alone, and a year to date figure is the cleanest way to evidence them.

Mixed arrangements are common, with a salaried hospital position alongside contracted sessions elsewhere. Both streams can be presented, each evidenced over the same period, so the assessment is made on total income.

Short gaps between engagements are normal and understood where there is twelve months or more of contracting history behind them.

Consumer loan or business finance

Two structures cover most cases, and the right one depends on how the vehicle is actually used.

A secured car loan is the straightforward consumer option. The vehicle acts as security, which often results in lower rates than an unsecured product, and it is the right fit where the car is mainly personal.

A chattel mortgage applies where you hold an ABN and use the vehicle in the business. It secures the loan against the vehicle while your business owns that asset from the outset. Where you are GST registered, the GST on the purchase price may be claimable as an input tax credit in your next BAS, and interest charges and depreciation are typically deductible. Repayments are usually fixed, with an optional balloon payment at the end of the term to reduce the regular amount. Tax outcomes depend on your structure, so confirm them with your accountant.

Getting the best outcome as a medical contractor

  • Have the current agreement ready, since it is the anchor document for a contractor assessment.
  • Keep three to six months of clean bank statements, ideally with business and personal banking separated.
  • Ask your accountant for a letter confirming income if your returns are not current.
  • Decide business or personal use first, because it determines whether a chattel mortgage is appropriate.
  • Compare the comparison rate, not the headline rate. Establishment and monthly fees change the real cost.

Frequently asked questions.

I contract through an ABN rather than being paid PAYG. Can I still get a car loan?

Yes. Contracting through an ABN is the usual arrangement in general practice, dental and much of allied health, and specialist lenders on our panel assess it directly. They look at your current service agreement, recent invoices and three to six months of bank statements to establish the pattern of income.

Do I need two years of tax returns?

Not always. While traditional lenders may require two years of returns, low doc and specialist lenders can work with as little as three to six months of bank statements and your current agreement. If your ABN is newer, specialist lenders can work with six to twelve months of registration and trading history.

What documents do contractor doctors need?

Typically your current agreement, recent invoices, three to six months of bank statements, and your ABN registration. Some lenders also accept an accountant's letter confirming income. Requirements vary between lenders, and we will tell you what a specific lender wants before you lodge.

Are hospital registrars and salaried doctors assessed differently?

Yes, and usually more simply. A PAYG hospital role is assessed on payslips and bank statements like any other employed position. If your roster includes recurring shift allowances, penalties or regular overtime, those should be presented as well rather than base salary alone.

Does the same apply to dentists and allied health?

Yes. Dentists, physiotherapists, radiographers and other allied health professionals frequently work under service agreements with an ABN, which is the same structure and the same assessment. The evidence required is the agreement and the banking, not the profession.

Is there a special doctor's product or discount?

Not on our panel, and we will not suggest otherwise. There is no doctor specific car loan product, professional package or lender we can point you to. What actually helps is having contractor income evidenced properly. Rates on our panel start from 6.49% p.a. depending on lender and circumstances.

Should I finance the car through my practice?

It depends on how the vehicle is used. Where it is used in the business and you hold an ABN, a chattel mortgage gives your business ownership of the asset from the outset, GST on the purchase price may be claimable as an input tax credit in your next BAS, and interest and depreciation are typically deductible. Those are questions for your accountant, and we can run both consumer and business options side by side.

Does applying affect my credit score?

A free assessment does not place an enquiry on your credit file. An enquiry is only recorded when you agree to lodge a formal application with a specific lender, which is why we compare first and apply once.
